For new parents, one of the gears you must have is a stroller. There are different types of strollers that it can be a little confusing which one to get. You don’t actually need to own each one, usually having two of these is sufficient. So to better understand each one and help you decide which type of stroller is right for you, you came into the right place.
The Different Types of Strollers
These types are usually sold in a combination of convenience stroller and infant car seat. It includes a stay-in-car base so you can place the baby in car safely then bring her/him out for a stroll, vice versa. But these types are often not of the highest quality and is not ideal to use for a prolonged period. The problem with these types, they are often not of high quality and instead of transferring our children to the stroller when we’re outside. It is tempting for us to keep our child in her infant seat placed on top of the stroller for prolonged time especially if we do not want to disturb them when we find them asleep. This, however, is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics because doing so will increase the risk of plagiocephaly or also known as misshapen skull which could also compromise young infant’s breathing.
Most car seats accommodate an infant up to 40 pounds, or approximately 4 years of age. The strollers are designed to fold quickly and easily, and are usually compact for easy storage. This is a good option for travels but we have the responsibility to make sure we minimize the use of infant car seat only when traveling and transfer our kids to a proper stroller.
Standard Full-Sized Strollers
These strollers are usually the biggest, heaviest and bulkiest among the bunch. So if you are just going out for quick trips or use public transits, this might not be ideal to bring since it requires too much work in fitting it inside your vehicle or carrying it around. But what’s great with standard and full sized strollers, they serve their functions very well and have the most features you will need for a stroller. Such additional features include a parent and child trays, large storage basket, full-recline feature and canopy.
These types also brings the most comfort to your child. And since they tend to be heavy, it is because they mostly durable and solid construction made with aluminum frames. These helps the stroller for better maneuverability, stability and resistance to rust. You will surely be using this for a long time before you will ever need to replace another.
Unlike other strollers that require them to a little older before you can use them, the standard and full-size strollers can be used from the time your child is born. You can also use when you baby has reached up to 50 pounds of weight and about 4 years of age.
Just by its name, you would already have an idea that these types are designed for active parents in mind. These are three-wheeled strollers that allow you to bring your baby along while you exercise. Jogging Strollers are usually available in two main types, a swivel front wheel and those with stationary one. While you may opt for swivel wheels to have better maneuverability, fixed wheels on the other hand are more stable and less likely to shake too much on every bump and dip when you are going too fast. They have unique features such as hand-brake and all-terrain wheels to prevent the stroller from too much shaking when you are going too fast and easily brakes it for sudden stops. They still have the common accessories like storage basket and comfortable seat.
Even when you have kids around, don’t let that hold you back from living your active lifestyle. This stroller lets you maximize your active lifestyle and still keeps your baby safe. You can go jogging, light hiking and camping with your baby just fine. However, jogging strollers do not recline and are not very safe to use with your children under six months old or who still unable to sit up. Jogging strollers can accommodate up to 50 pounds or roughly 5 years of age.
You got pregnant and to your surprise, you are not only expecting one kid, but twins! Now that’s twice the fun but also twice the work. But you don’t have to worry about spending on strollers twice as well, the double stroller is perfect for you. But this stroller is not only limited to you but can also be used if you have more than one young child. The double stroller lets you conveniently bring both of your toddlers along with you. This way, it will be a lot easier for you to bring both of your kids and monitor them.
They are available in various designs such as side-by-side, tandem or one where one child can sit behind and the other in front. Double strollers can also overlap with other types of stroller. You can sometimes find a jogging and double strollers in one or umbrella type double strollers. In short, a double stroller can also function similar with the other types. Similar to standard strollers, you can use this with newborns, but only if the seats can fully recline. You can also use this until your children reach about 40 pounds, or approximately 4 years of age.
These types of strollers are extremely lightweight and can be easily folded in compact form. That is why umbrella strollers can also be considered as lightweight and convenient strollers. They are ideal for short trips and traveling. It fits well in compact vehicles, overhead compartments of airplanes or can be taken on any public transit without much hassle. But since they don’t have much padding support compared to the standard strollers, it is recommended to use this if your baby have adequate head and neck control and can sit up unassisted, usually around 6 months of age and up to 50 pounds in weight.
With the fast paced lifestyle we have, it is only natural that we would want a stroller that we can easily operate and use. That is why, I feel that among these kinds of stroller, an umbrella type must be included in your gear since you are likely to use this often when running an errand or going for a quick stroll. Hence, you will be using it for a long period or even until your kids have all grown up. Eventually, almost all Americans will only be using this, if not, at least own one pair of these.
Now that you have figured out the right kind of stroller you need, I highly suggest you to get an umbrella stroller. It is really going to be a big help in taking care of our kids. Read the reviews to find the best umbrella strollers for you!
